Death Wish

Do you ever think that every event in your life is designed to help you live your life purpose, the core reason you’re alive?

Maybe it’s like hide and seek.  The universe embeds deep meaning in everything––licorice popcorn; the Serenity Prayer; or something really wacky: discovering that the stranger we met on a train can hold his breath for an hour and a half––and our life is a process of discovering how this experience can serve our heart’s deepest call: the person we’re committed to being or die trying.

Every morning first thing––usually after giving our horses their dawn hay, our dogs a chance to pee and poop, and bringing Dear cafe au lait in bed––I write in my journal and sip a large cup of Death Wish Coffee.

It was the name, the skull & crossbones logo, the elegant oversized black bag, and the red letter caution (Warning: the world’s strongest coffee) that captivated me enough to buy it on the spot.  I support excellence wherever I find it.  And you gotta love death right on the label, the way New Hampshire puts it boldly on the license plate.  Delightfully, the joe inside lived up to the promise.  It’s been a daily treat for three or four months now.

Long enough to be wondering why I’ve drawn this coffee to me as a sacred teacher.  As I say, that is how things work I choose to think.  Exquisite synchronicity.  Coincidence an illusion.  Accident merely a term for relations we haven’t developed the bandwidth to understand.

Which is why I feel poked to reflect on how the term Death Wish can serve the purpose of my life––to love no matter what, being one way to put it.  Isn’t that what this ruse is all about?  The universe whispering, “What deaths are most important to you, Steve?”

Here are some that popped up immediately.

The death of my ego’s compulsion to run the show.  The death of my attachment to any outcome, enjoyable or otherwise.  The death of pre-conditions for gratitude.  The death of fear as a limiting presence.  The death of needing to feel special.  The death of holding back.

How about you?  Any oddball events deepen your understanding of yourself?

Sharing my discoveries and welcoming yours is the purpose of this little playground.  I hope you’ll add your voice when it feels right.
